The song of the summer, “Old Town Road,” is as 2019 as it gets: It’s a bop, but it’s a hit that rose to popularity thanks to online platforms and that calls into question all conventional wisdom about race and country music. This showdown also comes amid a years-long discussion about the lack of women allowed into the upper echelon of still-critical radio airplay in the country music industry.
